This episode of the Forgive Yourself Podcast discusses setting New Year’s resolutions/goals vs intentions and the difference between them. I learned that resolutions or goals can have a more negative connotation to them, while intentions feel more heartfelt and nurturing.
Studies show that the top three areas that most people are making resolutions around are exercise, eating habits, and weight loss. It was also found that 80% of people who make New Year’s resolutions give up on them by the second week of January, and two thirds of people abandon their resolutions within a month. The three main reasons for abandoning resolutions are perfectionism, fear of failure, and excuses. Setting intentions is about the “why” behind what you are wanting to achieve or accomplish, and it is more heartfelt
Intentions are less about tasks and the to-dos and more about the feeling you want from taking any action or living that experience. It is more heartfelt to me than intellect, even though the brain has a place in following through with these intentions.
In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. The difference between New Year’s resolutions, goals, and intentions.
2. The potential causes and solutions for perfectionism and fear of failure, which can lead to abandoning New Year’s resolutions.
3. The power of setting intentions versus resolutions and goals, and how to use them to achieve desired outcomes.
